Fabio is a character from Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave. This is a log of my decent into madness and fixation.

Very First Impression

I attached to this character since first I saw him. He immediately stands out as probably the most exciting design of any FEFW character. Outside of his hair, which I think is slightly too flat (but is better in his actual 3d model), he basically has every characteristic I could hope for. An unconventional and awesome dark mage.

This was all from screenshots from early trailers, before any character information. I have no idea why I attached so quickly without even knowing much at all. It's quite lucky that he ended up as important as he is, or else I would've had nothing to chew on and it probably would've fizzled out.

Character Introduction

An enigmatic missionary skilled in dark magic. His special techniques break the enemy's will to fight.

Likes: Suffering, Half-forgotton feelings, Dissecting beautiful things

Interests: Drawing, Conversing with thoughtful people

While his character intro did cement his as a full spooky mage man, it is pretty disapointing that they couldn't write one physically unconvential guy that isn't in any way a wacky or evil freak. Even if they do subvert those expectations in the game, it would still be building off those yucky stereotypes.

However, I am still holding out hope for better execution for his character in-game.

It is highly intriging they would list 'Dissecting beautiful things' as a Like when he is companion to an infamously Beautiful man. Very interesting...

That, paired with 'Half-forgotton feelings', are such romantic and gothic things to have as an introduction to a character. I really hope they keep up this tone with everything related to him. We will have something very special on our hands if they do.

Secret Agarthan

I was initially (and still am) disappointed about all the evidence piling up for Fabio to be a secret Agarthan. They truly couldn't help themselves? They make one cool non-convential and non-anime-compliant design and he's from the evil secret people? Whatever man.

I did reach a point of acceptance where, even if he is Agarthan, he will be the best developed out of all of them by default, on account of being secondary only to a main character. And now, I have reached a new point. Where him being an obscenely obvious Agarthan is pretty funny.

Gay people??

I must admit, I hadn't properly considered the possibilities of Gay Fabio. My mistake, I really need to up my game drastically. It seems so obvious in hindsight, him being the retainer for the man that has been repeatedly described as etherally beautiful.

This kind of line is admittadly exciting, but also not a guarantee for any further development of this kind. I expect many characters to reference Dietrich's beauty upon first meeting him, and then never again.

The most exciting part is that two seperate reviewers given Previews mentioned the chemistry between Dietrich and Fabio, and one outright naming it a secret crush.

The character designs are all flamboyant, so no two Heroic Games contestants look too alike, and I'm particularly keen on the almost Castlevania-style gothic goodness of Dietrich and Fabio, who's part of the swordsmith's entourage. There's a bit of chemistry between this gothic pairing that has me hooked, and I'm eager to see if anything comes of it.

They truly summarised my feelings exactly, a perfect gothic pair. The wording on this also gives me some hope that there could be some reciprocal feelings on Dietrich's part. They will have enough in common anyway, with them being able to bond over Violence.

I have especially enjoyed Dietrich's path the most so far. His dark lust for blood and violence makes him such a badass, while at the same time, the companion he travels with named Fabio, completely tips the scale with his emotionless, dare I say totalitarianist views on the world. Fabio's secret crush on Dietrich is also hilarious to watch unfold, as he struggles to keep his sexual thoughts to himself.

It's a shame the review has a tiny twinge of (unintentional) homophobia seeping through, designating his crush as 'hilarious', and any hint of attraction being labelled 'sexual'. Though I can only hope that the game isn't treating Fabio as such. Or that the situation could be 'hilarious' for some other reason, rather than treating Gay as punchline. This is all down to execution, which I am giving the benefit of the doubt... please don't fuck it up.

Do I get the game?

With only 10 days (!!!!!) until FEFW comes out, I still haven't decided... do I get this game?

Because on the one hand, not having played Three Houses was no barrier to my Hubert brainrot, so I can definitely still get my enjoyment out of it. Getting to the meat of what I want exactly (Fabio support conversations) will probably be easier outside of the game, and seeing as he is hopefullyyyy going to intrigue more people than Hubert did, we could get more content.

On the other handddddddd, if I'm going to be brainrotted about this game for a good many months, as I forecast I will, I really should become a true fan. I also have a worry about missing out on Fabio characterisation, as I undoubtably have with Hubert (who probably became palatable to me only because my first impression was not him Edelgard yapping). If Fabio is indeed a major character, he will have too much dialogued to be contained in the youtube compilations that I will devour.

The real question for myself is, can I hold myself back from spoiling this entire game before I theoretically purchase it? Because the true answer to that is Probably not, even if I do end up buying it. I am just hungry for this game and more character... more blorbo...

Dietrich and Fabio: Beauty and the Beast

Fabio fell in love with Dietrich as a bloodthirsty beast at first, relishing in his monstrosity. Then he saw there was more to him than bloodshed. Fabio realized Dietrich's true beauty, his humanity. He realized he loved a man, not a beast.

As an Agarthan in the dark used to calling others beasts. It's irony at its finest when Fabio realizes that he doesn't truly desire dark power. What Fabio truly wants is to not lose the light of his life to darkness forever, to not lose himself and throw away his humanity.

I think it's beautiful that Fabio, who wanted to embrace the ugly, dark side of the world, who lost his faith in humanity, Begins to see the true beauty in mankind by seeing Dietrich's heart open up to others, Which in turn changes Fabio wanting to protect people, to protect love.

Thanks to HellaEmblem for painting a beautiful picture as to what Fabio and Dietrich could look like in practise. I have a very naive hope that they could achieve something close to this in the actual game. It would be amazing (and laughable ironic) if Fire Emblem was able to deal with the theme of true beauty, considering how many of their previous (female) characters were designed with only aesthetic appeal in mind.

The other day, they posted the first Character Relationship Chart for Cai's route, and I have been achinggg since then to see House Lamine's. This truly will define the whole game for me. I need my spooky fellas to be Intense.

FEFW SPOILERS BEYOND

It happened! I may have stayed up to a ridiculous time of night watching a live stream play through the first part of Dietrich's path. Probably a bad move, but hopefully it means I will be so tired that it resets my already terrible sleep schedule.

Part 1 Chapter 7 - Gazing at the Rose Moon

Fabio: During the Garland Moon in Fódlan, when you gaze upon the sky... you will see the Moon of the Rose.

Dietrich: It is beautiful.

Fabio (staring at Dietrich): Yes, it is.

This is what I'm here for! This is immediately after Fabio, very informally, confirms to Dietrich that he is not from the Church of Seiros, and is an Agarthan. Very relaxed reveal of his true name, though I suppose he already did drop all this info when talking to the Grand Monolith thing.

Part 1 Chapter 11 -

Fabio Free time dialogue:

How Esmeralda continues to prattle on about you - a never-ending stream of banal observations! For my part, I am free from this obsession with the opposite sex. The distinction between male and female holds no meaning for me whatsoever. When I received my Heart Core some three thousand years ago, the concept of a lifespan lost all meaning. Since that time, I have devoted my attention to the pursuit of scientific research. The Heart Core, or higher-dimension quantum reactor, is the crystallization of human wisdom. Every time I feel it within me, I am filled with pride. By extending my span, it liberates me from the need to replicate myself in the form of offspring.

Fabio in cutscene:

Dietrich, anything but this... Stop now! Don't do this, Dietrich! There's no coming back if you do! Dietrich! Dietrich, you are no beast!

Fabio dialogue:

Dietrich! You are no beast! You are human! You once blithely told me you are no more than a beast. At the time, I could not comprehend this. But now I understand. I had thought you were merely denigrating yourself. But no. That was a plea from within you. All this time you have feared you are so unlike others that you are not even human - but you wished to be! My compatriots and I scorned the surface dwellers as nothing more than beasts. But the truth was staring me in the face even then. You are no different from us! Yes, you are human. You have always been human! Please, stop! Stop this now and come back to us. You are human, and I love you!
